About the NCR
The National Chargepoint Registry (NCR) was established by the UK Government in 2011 to provide a public database of publicly-funded chargepoints across the UK in support of the Government’s objective to promote the use and sales of Ultra Low Emission vehicles (ULEVs). Operators or owners of any publicly accessible chargepoint may register their data.
Third party applications
One of the objectives of the NCR is to provide data to third parties for use in their applications.
Mapping tools/apps using NCR data include:
HERE Technologies to build EV services & products; ecarNI which shows points in N. Ireland; Greener Scotland which shows Scottish EV chargers; PlugSurfing, an app which allows covers the EU; Open Charge Map, which shows charge points in the UK & globally; mevCharge.com a route planner for EVs; Mitsubishi Motors which allows UK users to find Mitsubishi compatible points; The New Motion, that provides apps with search, filters & status notifications; MyRouteMonkey with battery aware route planning; & Zap-Map which displays chargepoint locations with user search functionality.
Access the data
The NCR database containing key information regarding the UK’s public chargepoint network is freely available to end users in XML, CSV, and JSON formats. An API is also available for developers to automatically download from NCR & import the dataset for their third party applications.
To download the latest version of the NCR database users are directed to the official Government data portal at: data.gov.uk/dataset/national-charge-point-registry. The database is regularly updated. The links to the NCR database on the Government data portal were setup in 2012, which is why that date is referenced. Data is provided free under the Open Government Licence. No registration is required for this service.
Uploading to the NCR
Network owners and operators are able to upload chargepoint information to the NCR either via a web portal, or using CSV files, on a periodic basis.
Organisations wanting to upload data should first register with the National Chargepoint Registry.
